Product summary
The good: The Motorola Rizr Z8 has an innovative design, an attractive display and user interface, and a generous multimedia feature set. Also, its call quality was decent, and the video playback was excellent.

The bad: The Motorola Rizr Z8 construction takes getting used to, and its controls and keypad are unintuitive. It lacks voice dialing, and its interface was rather slow.

The bottom line: The multimedia-friendly Motorola Rizr Z8 is a nice idea, but its pokey performance and awkward controls don’t do it any favors.

Design
From the outset it’s clear that the Rizr Z8 is a grown-up Rizr. Despite sporting a black skin and casting a larger profile (4.32 inches by 1.9 inches by 0.6 inch; 3.95 ounces) the Z8 looks quite similar to its predecessors when closed. You’ll see what appears to be the same navigation array and large display. There’s a new camera lens above the display, but otherwise the slider phone doesn’t give too much away, at least at first glance.

But for those who are patient, the Z8 holds some a few surprises. Unlike most slider handsets, which do not cradle the natural shape of your head, the Z8 offers something completely new. When open, the Z8 will bend in the middle to form a slight curve that angles inward. The resulting effect is similar to a flip phone or a banana, if you will, where the bottom end of the phone bends down to your mouth while the earpiece is positioned next to your ear. The “kick slide” mechanism (as it is called) has a comfortable and ergonomic effect, and is certainly innovative. Also, it allows you to rest the phone evenly on its side when open.

On the other hand, the opening mechanism is a tad tricky. Though it opens effortlessly thanks to a convenient thumb grip between the toggle and the display, it’s not so easy to use the grip when closing the phone. Also, if you try to push down the top end of the phone, you’ll need more effort than usual to do so. Both quirks are because of the bending design of the Z8, which makes it difficult to close the handset with a simple push. Instead, you’ll first need to bend the top half of the Z8 back until the phone is completely straight. Then, you can slide it down as normal. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s certainly worth noting, so it’s advisable you try the handset first. On the other hand, the Z8 on the whole has a solid construction.

The display measures 2.25 inches and supports a rich 16 million colors (320×240 pixels). It’s a bright, crisp display that shows colors, graphics and animations well. Also, we like the Symbian UIQ menu interface, which is a nice break from Moto’s traditional design. Some options are organized in scattered places–the wallpaper option isn’t under the main settings menu–but otherwise, we had few complaints. The backlight time does not appear to be adjustable.

Unfortunately, we didn’t approve of the Z8’s navigation array, which consists of a four-way toggle with a central OK button, two soft keys, a Clear button, a dedicated menu control (called the Home key here), and the Talk and End/Power buttons. Though they have the same basic design as on the other Rizrs, the keys and toggle are smaller and less tactile. All of the controls are stiff and none gave off a distinct “push” feel when pressed. Also, while raised ridges separate some of the keys, it was difficult to navigate by feel. Shortcuts are rather limited. You can designate the right soft key to give one-touch access to a user-defined feature and you can choose from a selection of six predetermined shortcuts to sit permanently on the standby screen.

The keypad buttons are flat with the surface of the phone, though tiny raised ridges give the individual keys some definition. It takes some practice to dial or text quickly, and the keys, like the navigation array, are somewhat stiff. There’s a bright backlighting, but we recommend that you first give the controls and keypad a test drive to make sure you like them.

A New Experience in Design & Usability
LGE Mobile Communications provides consumers with novel mobile experiences through its advanced mobile technology and premium handset design capabilities. Determined to bring about another wave of changes in the mobile market through an interactive user interface, LGE presents the KF600. This innovative handset makes user convenience its priority. Created with the aim of overcoming the limitations of existing mobile phones, every function is available through a flexible layout of navigation keys. Fixed keypads are a thing of the past with the KF600.

Luxurious Design

Featuring an innovative design with a sleek exterior

External Design:

With the display off, the LG KF600’s semi-reflective dual screen and mirror sharp black crystal finish add an attractive element to its already simple, yet sophisticated image, reminiscent of a luxury sedan.

Internal Design:

The keypad displayed when the Interact Pad is turned on is innovative and yet fundamentally subdued. The harmony of design elements adopted by the KF600 extends from the menu screen to the main screen to achieve a wholly original, creative design. Finally, the numeric keypad is hidden to ensure a continuation of its simple design.

The key to the KF600’s new technology is the Interact Pad.

The Interact Pad was developed to offer a more dynamic, optimized interface to users. Located at the bottom, the Interact Pad adjusts to whatever function is being accessed, modifying the menu to allow the user optimal operational controls. With each use, you will become more aware of the convenience it provides, doing away with the complicated steps you had to endure with previous phones.

The LG KF600 is an interactive UI phone. Its highly sophisticated design will keep your attention as others lean in to take notice. The Interact Pad will create a whole new experience in your mobile life – one of comfort and convenience.

Graphic Interior

A dynamic GUI theme integrates the two LCDs

The LG KF600 features a dynamic GUI theme based on the smooth connection established between the main screen and the Interact Pad when the wallpaper is displayed.

The dual screens connect as one: acting as a single unit or two interactive windows in a show and are configured based on individual themes. With a total of eight themes to choose from, every user will find a graphic interior to suit his or her taste. The dynamic wallpaper moves freely between the main screen and the Interact Pad as if one to the delight of users and onlookers alike.

In particular, world-renowned pop artist, Keith Haring provided five of the themes allowing the KF600 to move away from the standard mobile phone images of the past. The interactions of Keith Haring characters between the main and sub screens of such wallpapers provide a unique visual performance as well as a fresh concept in usability.

Yahoo Go Services allow the user to perform a search anytime and anywhere.

Yahoo Go Services

The LG KF600 supports Yahoo Go. With this capability, you can conveniently use the five services available – search, mail, local, address book, and calendar – without limitations in time or space. Make your life easier with Yahoo Go by keeping informed, up to date and always ‘on the go’.

A new interface that ensures user convenience

Sweeping Touch, shortcut Menus & 2×2 Key Design

For extra convenience, a sweeping touch feature has been added to the touch screen of the KF600. A light, sweeping hand motion will enable the user to scan through pictures, music and more. Users can freely move through three to four lists with a flick of a finger. With the KF600, moving between different menus has become easier, allowing amazingly quick access to frequently used functions.

The user can move directly to the message menu from ‘call history’ or a ‘contact’ list, making sending messages a snap. In addition, the user can set four out of the total six shortcut menus that are in Idle according to his/her preference. Even cursive scripts can be recognized with the interactive UI. The Interact Pad isn’t bogged down with a view of every function available. Instead, it simply arranges the keys of the most used functions in two rows, so that anybody can easily use the Interact Pad without the need to read a manual.

Multimedia services that boost enjoyment

Autofocus 3MP Camera, MP3 Player & Games

1. Camera:

The KF600 includes a three-megapixel camera with an image stabilizer and auto focus function for blur-free shooting in any situation, so that crisp, clear pictures are always at your fingertips.

2. MP3/FM Radio

The MP3 player of the KF600 offers improved sound quality, a capacity for expansion with an SD card and an intuitive management system. Together with the FM radio, which is a standard feature, the MP3 player will create memorable moments that go far beyond just the music in your ears.

3. Games

With ‘Thomsons & Touch’ and ‘Mini Game World’ included, the KF600’s dual-screen game function will let you enjoy the games dynamically without the restrictions of a single frame. The games even include touch screen compatibility, making them more interactive and life-like.

In particular, the Interact Pad offers optimized menu keys that suit any game-playing situation, thereby considerably increasing user convenience and enjoyment.

Another Sony Ericsson phone that promises much, but fails to deliver in practice. A superslim slide phone with the outstandingly good Walkman 3.0 music player, the W910i also offers an FM radio, a 2 megapixel camera, memory expandable to 4 Gbytes, 3G with HSDPA (super fast 3G) and the cool “shake control”. However, many users have reported that their phone freezes or shuts down – we have deducted two stars for this reason.
Best buy: *Free* with half-price line rental from Mobiles.co.uk (White Gold). New W910i Gaming version exclusively from the Carphone Warehouse (includes motion-based games such as Tomb Raider: Underworld, Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 09, SimCity Metropolis, and EA SPORTS FIFA MANAGER 08.)

Review: October 2007. Updated March 2009.

We’re getting fed up of writing good reviews of Sony Ericsson phones, only to be deluged by a flood of user reviews telling us that their phones simply don’t work. What good is a phone that’s outstanding when it works, but has such poor quality control in its manufacturer that many users receive a dud? The big problem with the W910i is freezing and switching off. Read the user reviews below to appreciate just how common this fault is. If this phone actually worked, it would be fantastic, but if it doesn’t it’s an expensive lump of plastic. Do you want to take the risk?

The Sony Ericsson W910i is a superslim slide phone, measuring just 12.5mm thick (slimmer than the Samsung D900.) It’s a lovely looking phone with a tapered bottom edge and a superslim profile. The W910i wears its Walkman credentials on its sleeve, with music controls featured prominently when the slide is closed. Fortunately SE have given the W910i am easy-to-use circular navigational key, not the dreaded joystick that appears on some of their models. The screen is large, bright and high resolution (240 x 320 pixels) and the menus are clear and simple to navigate. The slide opens smoothly to reveal the full keypad below. Sony Ericsson have got a funny thing going on with keypads at the moment. With each new phone we find a new style of keypad, some with tiny “designer” buttons, others with larger, more conventional ones. The W910i has larger, flatter keys than most, but it still isn’t as easy to use as many rival phones. It’s high time that SE got their act together with the keypad issue. Anyway, the W910i doesn’t have the fastest keypad for texting, but it’s not the worst.

The W910i incorporates Sony Ericsson’s new “Shake Control” that lets you change to a new random track by giving the phone a flick. The motion sensor also lets you flip between portrait and landscape viewing of photos. Fun, but not life changing.

So, this is a music phone first and foremost, and it ticks all the boxes. Audio quality is excellent as usual, with SE’s MegaBass feature to enhance bass frequencies. You can plug in a conventional stereo headset or use a Bluetooth stereo headset if you prefer. The Walkman music player 3.0 is very easy to use, with controls on the front of the phone, and is a fully-featured digital music player. You can create and manage playlists, shuffle songs, equalise, etc, etc. The supplied software lets you transfer music from PC to phone, and rip music from CD’s. Storage is limited to 35 Mbytes, so you’ll want to add a memory card – the W910i supports cards up to 4 Gbytes. In addition there’s an FM radio equipped with RDS.

The camera is rated at a middle-of-the-road 2 megapixels and lacks autofocus, putting it well behind the flagship K850i. But this is a Walkman phone, not a Cyber-Shot, so you pay your money and make your choice. The full phone specs are listed below, but we’ll just point out that this is a 3G phone with HSDPA (high speed 3G) and video calling.

The Walkman range is looking quite crowded at the moment, but what makes this one stand out for us is (1) the lightweight superslim design, (2) the outstandingly good Walkman 3.0 music player, and (3) the HSDPA 3G connection for fast music downloads and video calling. If you want a better camera, choose the Sony Ericsson K850i Cyber-Shot phone; if you’re not interested in 3G you might prefer the Sony Ericsson W610i; and if the superslim design of the W910i doesn’t do it for you, then take a look at the good old W850i. But a final word of warning: many people have experienced faults with their W910i. If you’re lucky, or have good phone insurance, then you’ll be happy with your W910i. But if you’re not one of the lucky ones, this could be an expensive mistake. Sony Ericsson had better wake up soon or they’re going to lose market share in a big way!

Nokia 7070 Prism is another new handset announced today by the Finnish company, together with Nokia 5000 and other two low-end devices. Nokia’s Prism handsets
released until now (7500, 7900 and 7900 Crystal) are known for being quite pricey, and that’s mainly due to their stylish looks. The new handset to join the Prism collection, Nokia 7070 Prism, is also good looking, but it comes with very basic features, being the “poor cousin” of the other Prism phones.

Targeted to users who can’t afford expensive handsets but still want a good looking mobile device, 7070 is the only Nokia Prism to come in a clamshell form factor. As long as you keep it closed in your hand, people might think, at a first sight, that you’re holding an expensive handset. But its inexpensiveness appears once you look at it closer and once you open it.

Weighing 78 grams and measuring 87.5 x 44 x 15.8 millimeters, the new Prism packs a pretty small 128 x 160 pixels TFT display with 65K colors support and, as Nokia 5000, it comes with dual-band GSM connectivity. The rest of the features are also on the low side, only including Nokia Xpress Audio Messaging, Java MIDP 2.0, WAP 2.0, 11MB of internal memory (without the ability to expand it), handsfree, calculator, calendar, light indicator, T9 and that’s about it. There’s no USB, nor Bluetooth or FM radio, but there’s a Li-Ion 700 mAh battery that should get the phone going for about 5 hours in talk-time mode and up to 480 hours in stand-by.

Hot on the heels of Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic I’ve got a somewhat less innovative Nokia phone for review. The 7210 Supernova is a small, thin, light handset and I mean light for the pocket as well as light on features.

Being light on features doesn’t necessarily make for a handset to be avoided at all costs. A mid-ranger can be a superb phone if its capabilities are nicely chosen and well integrated, and it performs well. Crucially, though, it also has to offer value for money.

The physical design has a certain appeal in two ways. First, this is a neat phone. It measures 106mm tall, 45mm wide and 10.6mm thick and it weighs just 70g. Second, the general look is nice. My review sample was the blue one, which means turquoise highlights on the number pad area and a turquoise edging. There are pink and grey options too. All the phones have white, grey and black filling out the bulk of the colour scheme.

But usability is not what it could be. The numberpad is flat and not as responsive as it ought to be. You have to press relatively hard to make contact with a key, which takes a little getting used to. I found texting at speed was a bit of a challenge and stubby-fingered types could suffer particularly.

At just two inches, the screen is tiny and although it has 240 x 320 pixels, which make it look sharp, it just isn’t large enough for things like web browsing or viewing serious amounts of data.

Nokia’s latest cell phone, the 6301, has Unlimited Mobile Access (UMA) technology, which means you can make calls over the Internet via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and revert to GSM when out of range. It’s slim, lightweight, has a two-megapixel camera, MP3 player, FM radio, two-inch screen and a desk stand.

With a sleek stainless steel design, the Nokia 6301 phone launched today is not only stylish, but offers consumers seamless voice and data mobility across GSM cellular and WLAN networks via Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) technology. The Nokia 6301 phone uses UMA technology to integrate the benefits of landline and a mobile phone, including seamless indoor coverage, sound quality and affordability. “The convergence of mobile and fixed/land-line technologies means consumers are looking for products that can help make their lives easier,” said Peter Ropke, Senior Vice President, Mobile Phones, Nokia. “With the Nokia 6301 utilizing UMA technology, worldwide triband GSM coverage is combined with superior indoor WLAN coverage to create a device that people can use in virtually any situation. With UMA technology, the consumer can use the GSM network or a broadband Internet-connected WLAN network for mobile services. This can ensure excellent indoor coverage both at office and home. The consumer can have one multi-mode handset that works everywhere with enhanced and easy-to-use voice services. And, WLAN/UMA provides excellent coverage and sound quality, even in areas where mobile phone reception has previously been poor. With UMA technology, the Nokia 6301 benefits operators as well, allowing them to deliver voice and data services to subscribers over WLAN, substantially increasing mobile service availability while decreasing the costs related to network deployment. Orange will be one of the first operators to offer the Nokia 6301, as part of its Unik/Unique portfolio. Yves Maitre, Senior Vice President, Devices, Orange said “The Nokia 6301 is a stylish new addition to our Unik range of converged fixed and mobile phones. Orange’s Unik offer brings together the convenience of a single phone and tariff at home and on the move and the widest range of UMA handsets. The Nokia 6301, with its sleek candy bar design and attractive stainless steel exterior adds to the appeal of Unik for Orange customers.” The Nokia 6301 is an evolution of the modern monoblock design. Weighing a mere 93 grams and measuring less than 13.1mm thin, the Nokia 6301 is constructed of quality materials. To accompany the UMA technology, the Nokia 6301 also offers consumers a modern suite of features, including a 2 megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom and full screen viewfinder. Ideal for home and office, the Nokia 6301 comes with an attractive desk stand, the Nokia Desk Stand DT-23, to hold the phone and keep its battery charged while connected to WLAN. The clean lines and recessed buttons of the Nokia 6301 are highlighted by a stainless steel frame with hand-hugging curves. In addition, the Nokia 6301 includes: – 2-inch QVGA screen – USB/PC Synchronization – Internal user memory of 30MB and 128MB in-box microSD card, with support for up to 4GB microSD cards – Voice dialing, voice commands and voice recording – MP3 player, FM radio – Integrated hands-free speaker The Nokia 6301 has a talk-time of up to 3.5 hours and a standby time of up to 14 days.
